What is Big Think?

We are Big Idea Hunters…

We live in a time of information abundance, which far too many of us see as information overload. With the sum total of human knowledge, past and present, at our fingertips, we’re faced with a crisis of attention: which ideas should we engage with, and why? Big Think is an evolving roadmap to the best thinking on the planet — the ideas that can help you think flexibly and act decisively in a multivariate world.

A word about Big Ideas and Themes — The architecture of Big Think

Big ideas are lenses for envisioning the future. Every article and video on bigthink.com and on our learning platforms is based on an emerging “big idea” that is significant, widely relevant, and actionable. We’re sifting the noise for the questions and insights that have the power to change all of our lives, for decades to come. For example, reverse-engineering is a big idea in that the concept is increasingly useful across multiple disciplines, from education to nanotechnology.

Themes are the seven broad umbrellas under which we organize the hundreds of big ideas that populate Big Think. They include New World Order, Earth and Beyond, 21st Century Living, Going Mental, Extreme Biology, Power and Influence, and Inventing the Future.

I Am NOT God

I know it’s an easy mistake, especially given my divinely handsome looks.  But please don’t confuse me with God, and please stop worshiping me.  I am not God.

Yes, I do know everything, and, yes, I can predict the future.  But it’s not because I am God, but because I’m an evolutionary psychologist.  Any evolutionary psychologist knows as much as I do (and much more).  It’s not our divinity that allows us to know everything and to predict the future; it’s the power of good theory.

In this particular case, I differ from two of my personal idols, Alec Baldwin and Aaron Sorkin.

I am not God.

My fellow scientists and I are humble servants of God, who merely try to figure out and explain how things work in the universe that God created.  We did not create the universe or anything in it.  We did not create the race or sex difference in intelligence, and we did not create the race or sex difference in physical attractiveness.  God did.

If you have a problem with the explanation for how the world works, you take it up with the scientist (but only if your problem is logical or evidentiary; no other reason is legitimate).  If you have a problem with how the world works, you take it up with God.  You can email your complaint to God at:  Complaints@LifeTheUniverseAndEverything.ie

Yes, God is Irish.  You didn’t know?  I did, because – wait for it – I know everything.
